What is The Six Nations?

The Six Nations rugby union tournament is held every year between England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy with each team playing each other once with home advantage alternating each year. Two points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat.

If a team wins all five of their games they are awarded the “Grand Slam”, if one of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland beat the other three home nation teams they are awarded the Triple Crown. Whoever wins the annual England v Scotland fixture is awarded the Calcutta Cup. Up until 2000 the tournament was referred to the Five Nations but in the year 2000 Italy entered the tournament and it then became the Six Nations Championships.

Ireland won the tournament last year and England and Wales are the outright leaders in tournaments won with twenty six Championships a piece and since the first Six Nations Championships in the year 2000 only Italy and Scotland have failed to win the tournament.

England play their fixtures at Twickenham where the capacity is 82,000, France in Paris in the 81,000 capacity Stade de France, Wales in the 74,000 Millennium stadium in Cardiff, which has one of the best atmospheres in world rugby, Italy, in Rome, at the Stadio Olimpico which holds 72,000, Scotland, in Edinburgh, at Murrayfield which holds 67,000 and finally Ireland play their games in Dublin at the 52,000 capacity Aviva stadium.
