The Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is one of the highlights of the National Hunt season and comes with prize money to match, with only the Grand National having offered higher prize money.

The Cheltenham Festival is renowned for its carnival atmosphere which is in part due to all the Irish in attendance who come over for the festival each year. The Festival hosts several Grade 1 races which include the Champions Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Stayer’s Hurdle and of course the biggest race of them the Cheltenham Gold Cup which is run on the Friday.

The festival starts on the Tuesday and runs to the Friday. Tuesday is known as ‘Champions Day’, Wednesday is known as Ladies Day, Thursday ‘St Patrick’s Day’ and Friday is ‘Gold Cup Day.’ Prior to 2005 the festival was just run over three days.

The Cheltenham Festival started in 1860 and has been held at various courses before it moved to Prestbury Park in Cheltenham where it has been ever since. The Cheltenham Gold Cup, the pinnacle of the four-day festival, was first run in 1924.

In 2021 the Cheltenham Festival had no spectators due to the government restrictions regarding Covid 19, but crowds came back for the Cheltenham Festival in 2022 and we had the first female jockey, Rachael Blackmore, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup. 2026 will be as popular as ever and there will be 28 races during the Cheltenham festival.

Ruby Walsh is the most successful jockey with over 50 winners with Willie Mullins the most successful trainer who will be looking to add to his winners in the 2026 Cheltenham Festival.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 race is run on the Friday over 3 miles 2 ½ furlongs which comprises of 22 jumps and is the most prestigious of races in the National Hunt calendar. It is for horses aged five years and above and offers prize money of close to £700,000.

The first Cheltenham Gold Cup took place in 1819 and was a flat race, it was only from 1924 when it was run with fences.

Famous winners have included Desert Orchid, Kauto Star and Best Mate who is one of only four horses who has won the Cheltenham Gold Cup more than three times. Golden Miller is the most successful horse with five wins, Pat Taaffe the leading jockey and Tom Dreaper the most successful trainer having trained five Cheltenham Gold Cup winners.
