Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Monaco Historic Grand Prix?
It’s a biennial motorsport event (every two years) celebrating the golden age of racing. Classic and historic Grand Prix cars race on the same iconic street circuit as the modern Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.
When is the next event?
The 15th edition takes place 24–26 April 2026. Practice and qualifying sessions happen Friday and Saturday; the main races run on Sunday.
Where does it happen?
On the Circuit de Monaco – the same streets as the modern F1 Grand Prix, winding through Monte Carlo, La Condamine and Port Hercule.
What kind of cars compete?
Everything from pre-war voiturettes and front-engine GP cars to 1980s turbo-powered Formula 1 cars. Each race group is organised by era and car type.
How is it different from the F1 Monaco Grand Prix?
The F1 Grand Prix is part of the current World Championship; the Historic GP showcases classic cars and has a more nostalgic, boutique atmosphere with generally lower ticket prices and a more relaxed crowd.
Are there hospitality options?
Yes – from VIP terraces and trackside suites to luxury yacht packages. These usually include gourmet catering, open bars, and premium views over the circuit.
What should I wear?
Smart-casual is typical for grandstands; VIP terraces and yachts call for stylish attire (think Riviera chic). Sun protection is recommended during the day.
How do I get to Monaco for the event?
Fly to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (about 30 minutes away) then take a taxi, train, helicopter transfer, or pre-arranged shuttle to Monaco
Iconic Moments & Highlights
Some standout moments in the history of the Monaco Historic GP and adjacent celebrations:
1. 1997 — the first edition
• The inaugural Historic Grand Prix was in 1997, tied to the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi family.
• It was supposed to be a one-off but proved so popular that they made it a regular biennial event.
2. Senna Parade (2024)
• During the 14th Monaco Historic GP, there was a parade honouring Ayrton Senna.
• It included some of his iconic cars (for example his 1990 McLaren MP4/5B) and contributions from people close to him, including his nephew Bruno Senna and others.
3. “When Atmos rhymes with… Turbos!”
• For the 2026 edition, they are introducing a new class for turbo-engine F1 cars (1981-1985 era) as per FIA changes. This is special because it augments the field with a group that had been planned earlier but hadn’t been activated.
4. Large & varied field of classics
• In past editions (e.g. 2024), more than 200 vintage / historic racing cars have been entered, many in perfect condition, covering many eras. Enthusiasts love seeing front-engine sports cars, pre-war machines, ’60s/’70s F1 cars etc.
5. Tribute to legends and history
• Statues / memorials (e.g. statue of Louis Chiron unveiled in 1997) as part of the event.
• The Historic GP often includes parades honouring racing legends, reflecting deeply on motorsport heritage.
