Novak Djokovic and Ash Barty reigned supreme at Wimbledon this year in the Men’s and Ladies singles each picking up a cheque of £1,700,000.

Djokovic has had a sensational 2021 winning the Australian, French and now Wimbledon to put him level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slams. These three players have dominated tennis over the last 15 years and especially in the case of Djokovic show no sign of easing up.

This was Djokovic’s sixth win on the grass of Wimbledon and this year’s tournament was probably one of his most straight forward. Despite losing the first set a couple of times in the Championship you always felt he would step up a gear in the remaining sets and this proved the point.

He lost the first set in his first match against Britain’s 19-year-old wildcard Jack Draper but came back strongly and won the next three sets.

In the final he beat Italy’s Berrettini three sets to one. Like Draper Berrettini won the first set but Djokovic turned it up a notch in the next three sets and won quite convincingly in the end.

Djokovic in now on for a ‘calendar grand slam.’ Rod Laver was the last man to achieve this back in 1969. Few would bet against Djokovic at the US Open.

In the Ladies tournament Australia’s Ash Barty won her first Wimbledon title defeating Karolina Pliskova in the final by two sets to one. This was her second Grand Slam, and she has now been number one in the world rankings for over a year. She won the first set quite easily before Pliskova came back strongly in the second, but Barty raised her game further and won the deciding set comfortably.

What was great about the 2021 Wimbledon Championships was the sight of fans at a Grand Slam again. Wimbledon was cancelled in 2020 and there were doubts that the tournament in 2021 would go ahead but it did and as usual it was very well organised, covid secure with everyone having to have had a double vaccine or negative test to be able to enter. The Ladies and Men’s final were played to a full capacity on centre court and the atmosphere was electric.
