History of Ireland v England

Ireland v England is one of the oldest and most prestigious fixtures in world rugby, dating back to the nineteenth century, celebrated for its intensity, drama, and tradition. The first official rugby match between Ireland and England took place in 1875 at The Oval in London, with England emerging as the victors.

Notable matches between Ireland and England include the 1954 clash, where Ireland secured their first-ever Grand Slam by defeating England at Twickenham. The 2007 encounter saw Ireland famously deny England the Grand Slam with a dramatic victory at Croke Park in Dublin.

Ireland have been more dominant in recent years winning the Six Nations in 2023 and the Championship in 2024, a defeat to England at Twickenham prevented them winning the Grand Slam.

England have won thirteen Grand Slams whilst Ireland have won four.
