The Champions League is the trophy each European team wants to win each year and has one of the highest TV audiences in world sport with around 500 million people watching the final each year.

The competition started in 1955 when it was known as the European Cup but changed its name to the Champions League in 1992. Thirty-two teams enter the group stage in eight groups of four teams with the top two teams qualifying for the knockout stages which start in 2017.

Bayern Munich defeated Paris St Germain in the 2020 final, in Lisbon, which was their sixth title.

Liverpool are the most successful English side with six titles, their last being in 2019 when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

The ten most successful clubs are listed below

Benfica (2 titles) – They contested five finals in the 1960’s winning two of them to give them their second title.

Chelsea (2 titles) – Chelsea won their second title in May 2021 beating Manchester City.

Juventus (2 titles) – The now dominant force of Italian football has only won the competition twice, the last being in 1996. They have been runners up 7 times.

Manchester United (3 titles) – For a club of their size they will feel they should have won it more than three times, the most recent of which was in 2008 against Chelsea.

Inter Milan (3 titles)  – Have won the competition three times, the last time in 2010 when Jose Mourinho was there coach with a narrow win over Bayern Munich.

Ajax (4 titles) – Like AC Milan haven’t been a dominant force in recent years but won it three years in a row from 1971-1973 as well as in 1995.

Barcelona (5 titles) – Have won the competition five times although despite the brilliance of Lionel Messi have struggled in recent years.

Liverpool (6 titles) – Had the most famous of comebacks when in 2005 they recovered from three nil done at half time to beat AC Milan which gave them their fifth title. They last won the title in 2019 when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid

Bayern Munich (6 titles) – The dominant force in German football have won the title six times, most recently in 2020 against PSG.

AC Milan (7 titles) – Although not the force they were in the late 1980’s / early 1990’s, with the likes of Gullit, Van Basten and Baresi, they have won it seven times

Real Madrid (15 titles) – They have won the title fourteen times including three years in a row from 2016-2018. They also won the first title in 1956.

Current Format

The UEFA Champions League format underwent a significant change starting in the 2024/25 season, transitioning to the “Swiss model”. Here’s our overview of the updated structure:

Champions League Group Stage (Swiss Model)

  1. Participants:
    • 36 teams (increased from 32).
  2. Structure:
    • Instead of traditional eight groups of four, all 36 teams compete in a single league table.
    • Each team plays 8 matches (4 home and 4 away) against different opponents, determined by seeding.
  3. Seeding:
    • Matches are based on UEFA coefficients and rankings to balance competition levels.
    • Teams are matched with opponents of varying strengths.
  4. Qualification to Knockouts:
    • The top 8 teams in the league table advance directly to the Round of 16.
    • Teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a play-off round to secure the remaining 8 spots in the Round of 16.

Champions League Knockout Rounds

  1. Play-off Round:
    • 16 teams (ranked 9th–24th) compete in two-legged ties.
    • Winners join the top 8 in the Round of 16.
  2. Traditional Knockout Format:
    • From the Round of 16 onwards, the tournament follows the standard two-legged knockout ties.
    • Includes:
      • Round of 16
      • Quarter-finals
      • Semi-finals
    • The Final remains a single-leg match at a neutral venue.

Additional Key Changes

  • Expanded Teams:
    • The 36 teams include two additional spots for clubs based on UEFA coefficients (countries with the best-performing teams in European competitions).
    • More opportunities for smaller leagues to enter the competition.
  • More Matches:
    • Each team plays at least 8 group-stage matches (up from 6 in the old format).
    • Total matches increase from 125 to 189.
  • Revenue Growth:
    • More matches mean increased broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and ticketing revenues.

Benefits of the Swiss Model

  • Enhanced competition by matching teams of varying strengths.
  • Increased opportunity for clubs across Europe to participate.
  • More excitement with the play-off round.

This updated format aims to maintain the competition’s prestige while increasing fan engagement through more matches and wider participation.
